Dust & Fun Flat Track Trophy: results from Round 2 in Ravenna

Two months after the opening round in Lonigo (VI), the Dust & Fun Trophy was back on track—this time returning to where it all began three years ago: the Ravenna oval, run by the local motorcycle club. Two days of dust and fun, just as the name suggests, but also of scorching heat and serious sweat in a blazing June weekend. The weather didn’t make it easy—the slippery surface challenged every rider, and the beach umbrella proved more tempting than the throttle for more than a few. Entries were on the low side: 5 riders in the Modern class, 5 in the Rookies, and 8 in the Thunderbike, alongside around 15 competitors lining up for the Italian Flat Track Championship, held concurrently.

The Modern class, open to 450 DTX bikes, saw a repeat of Lonigo: Davide Maran dominated the field once again. The 2024 Rookie champ rode his Honda to a clean sweep, winning every heat and the final. Gioele Compri, on Kawasaki, took second, while Carlo Pettinato— registered in the Royal Enfield one-make class—jumped into Modern at the last minute aboard his Scram 411 with flat track kit, and snatched third. Just off the podium were Gian Maria Gabbiani in fourth and Domenico Renzetti in fifth, both riding Honda CRF 450 R machines.

Things got spicier in Thunderbike, where another intense showdown unfolded between the Rotax’s of Sami Panseri and Carlo Pettinato. Panseri came out on top again, winning 3 out of 4 heats and sealing the deal in the final—even with Pettinato constantly on his tail. The smaller Ravenna oval didn’t allow the same overtaking as Lonigo, but nearly every race ended with less than a second between riders. Third place went to Marco Barbati on a Ducati, temporarily borrowed from the Hooligan class, which only had two entries on the day.

Michele Cuccu, riding a TM, clinched the top spot in Rookies, ahead of Alessandro Mantia on KTM, and Simone Zanchetta, who impressed aboard a rare BMW G 450 X prepped for flat track.

The Ravenna round brought the Dust & Fun Flat Track Trophy back to its roots. Born in 2022 almost as a get-together among friends rather than a racing series, the spirit remains. Before Sunday’s heats and finals, Saturday was all about open practice—welcoming everyone to the track—followed by a barbecue under the stars with friends and rivals alike. That kind of camaraderie is not exactly standard fare between competitors.

Next stop: July 27 in Boves (Piedmont), on a brand new oval replacing the TT-style circuit used in previous editions. The series will return to Ravenna in October for the final round of the Championship.

For those curious to try their hand at flat track racing, Royal Enfield offers track-ready bikes for rent, the same used in their official Slide School program. For more info, check out the official Dust & Fun channels.
